Zopa Car Finance: How It Works, Rates & Alternatives
Independent explainer — we don't sell Zopa finance, take no commission and route only to our own free calculators.
Zopa is a UK bank and direct lender that offers car finance and personal loans, lending its own money rather than acting as a broker. It is authorised and regulated by the FCA. Work out the true cost of any Zopa-style deal on our free car finance calculator.
This page explains, independently, how Zopa car finance tends to work, the products on offer, the rates you might see, and how HP from a bank compares with a personal loan.
Who is Zopa?
Zopa is a direct lender and a bank, not a broker — it provides the funds itself for car finance and personal loans, and started life as a peer-to-peer lender before becoming a fully-licensed bank.
Because Zopa lends its own money, the agreement is between you and Zopa. It must be FCA-authorised and run an affordability check before lending. As a bank it can offer both secured car finance (HP) and unsecured personal loans, which gives you a choice the typical dealer-finance lender doesn't: spread the car's price with the car as security, or borrow and own the car outright from day one.
Being a direct-to-consumer digital bank, Zopa typically deals with you online rather than through a dealer forecourt. Your Consumer Credit Act rights apply either way — including voluntary termination at 50% on HP and early settlement with an interest rebate on both products.
Bank vs dealer finance
What products does Zopa offer?
Zopa typically provides Hire Purchase (HP) car finance and personal loans, both funded by the bank itself.
With HP, the car is the security: you pay fixed monthly instalments and own the car at the end. With a personal loan, the borrowing is unsecured — you own the car from the moment you buy it and can sell it whenever you like, with no lender permission needed. That flexibility is the main practical difference between the two, beyond the rate.
Because Zopa offers both, you can compare them like-for-like on the same car before you decide. The right choice depends on whether you value outright ownership (loan) or a potentially lower rate thanks to the security (HP).
- Hire Purchase (HP): pay off the whole price and own the car at the end — model it on the HP calculator.
- Personal loan: borrow and buy the car outright, owning it from day one — model it on the loan calculator.
- Fixed monthly payments: the rate and term are set at the start on both products.
- Direct-to-consumer: arranged online with the bank, not at a dealer.
What rates and eligibility does Zopa look at?
Your Zopa rate depends on your credit profile and the amount, not a single advertised figure — the APR is set after a credit and affordability check.
Zopa advertises representative APRs on its site. As an illustration of how representative figures work, Zopa's site has shown a representative 13.9% APR on HP (for example, £10,000 over 5 years at about £228 a month) and a higher representative APR on its unsecured car loans (for example, 22.9% APR on a £10,000 loan over 5 years). Treat any figure as representative — your personal APR depends on your file, the amount and the term, and at least 51% of accepted customers must get the advertised rate.
Any rate a lender advertises is representative, so the one you're offered may differ. Turn any quote into its real cost with our APR calculator, which shows the total interest in pounds, before you decide between HP and a loan.

How Zopa compares — your alternatives
Zopa offers both car finance and loans, so the right choice depends on whether you want the lender to hold the car as security.
With a personal loan you own the car from day one and can sell it any time; with HP the lender owns it until you've paid. Compare both on the total amount payable on the main calculator.
| Option | Own the car? | Typical use | Compare on |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP (Zopa-style) | Yes, at the end | Spreading a car's price | HP calculator |
| Personal loan | From day one | Buying from any seller | Loan calculator |
| PCP (elsewhere) | Optional (balloon) | Lower monthly | PCP calculator |
| Dealer finance | Depends on product | Convenient at point of sale | main calculator |
The motor finance commission context
Because Zopa deals direct with the consumer rather than through a dealer network, the Discretionary Commission Arrangements (DCA) story affects it differently — but agreements from the relevant period can still be checked.
DCAs were a dealer-and-broker commission model: a dealer or broker set the rate within a range and kept more commission the higher it went. The FCA banned DCAs in January 2021 and confirmed an industry-wide redress scheme in 2026 (PS26/3) covering agreements from 2007 to 2024. Direct-to-consumer lenders are less exposed to DCA claims than dealer-introduced lenders, but if your Zopa agreement from that period went through any intermediary, or you're simply unsure, it's worth checking.
The scheme is free for consumers to use directly — you don't need a claims firm. If an existing Zopa car finance agreement may have carried hidden commission, read whether it could have been mis-sold and estimate any redress yourself, free.

Representative vs personal APR — how Zopa's headline figures work
A representative APR is the rate at least 51% of accepted customers are offered; your personal APR is the rate you actually get, and on an unsecured loan it can be well above the representative figure.
The 51% rule is the part most buyers miss. When a bank advertises a representative APR, it only has to give that rate to a bare majority of accepted applicants — up to 49% can be offered a higher one. Because Zopa's unsecured car loan carries a higher representative APR than its HP, that wider upside on the loan means a 'representative' personal-loan quote can climb steeply if your file is anything less than strong. The security on HP is why its representative rate is lower: the car backs the borrowing, so the lender takes less risk and can price accordingly.
The practical takeaway is to read the SECCI's personal APR box, not the marketing page. The gap between the representative and your personal rate is the single biggest driver of total cost. Plug your personal APR into our APR calculator to see the total interest in pounds, and if the loan quote comes back high, run the same car through the HP calculator — the secured route may be cheaper even with a slightly shorter term.

Common mistakes with bank car finance
Pros and cons of this kind of finance
A bank like Zopa gives you a direct, online route and a choice between HP and a loan — but the rate you get still depends on your credit file.
- Pros: arrange direct online; choice of HP or unsecured loan; own the car outright with a loan; FCA-regulated bank.
- Cons: the rate you're offered may exceed the representative APR; no dealer convenience; an unsecured loan needs a stronger file; PCP isn't offered, so you can't keep the monthly low with a balloon.
Your alternatives
Beyond Zopa, you can use dealer finance, a broker, a direct prime lender, or manufacturer finance on a new car.
Dealer finance is convenient but historically wasn't always priced in your favour. A broker compares several lenders in one go. Manufacturer finance sometimes offers genuine 0% or deposit contributions — but compare the total cost against any cash discount you'd give up.
